The Story of Jericho Beach

Last year after an extensive, six month public consultation process the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, having weighed all of the evidence, decided to remove the majority of a rotting acre and a half of concrete, supported on 400 creosote leeching pilings, which was built by the military before World War II and return Central Jericho Beach to its natural state. A 5000sq foot section would be retained and used as a viewing platform over English Bay. A great decision and one the majority of Vancouverites supported.

In the fall, 2008, the new "green" Vision Vancouver parks board was elected. It appears this new parks board made an election promise to overthrow the original parks board decision for a small minority group of local residents. Consequently, the former NPA parks board decision was reversed in spite of evidence to suggest a clear majority of Vancouverites favoured the full or partial removal of the wharf. The new "green" Visions parks board has now voted to redo the public consultation process, spend more of our money, so as to keep a minority interest group happy.
